Candidates undergo a kind of interview. Among the questions potential monks are asked is “Are you human?” You’d think the questioner could tell by looking. But according to an old Buddhist story, every now and then a snake will take try to pass himself off as a man. That would be bad. Hence the question.
In rituals like these of course everyone already knows what to expect. Nobody answers the wrong way.
